The NY nephew graduates!

For those of you who don't know; I am from New York; specifically upstate New York. When people refer to themselves as "New Yorkers" it's means they're from the city. As I always say I'm from upstate New York; it defines the area I'm from. I was born in Rochester and grew up and went to high school in New Hartford. My eldest sister Sherri still resides in New Hartford and her youngest son, my nephew Matthew; graduated from college on May 16. I flew to NY on my own as Dave is out of vacation time. 2008 is a busy graduation and wedding year for me. Matthew is the first to graduate. Next month; my middle sister Tracie who lives in California has a daughter Gillian graduating high school and a son Jordan graduating college in the same week; whew!

Matthew graduated from SUNY Purchase. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree from the School of Arts Conservatory of Music. He is a very talented percussionist and plays many instruments including the xylophone.

Let me tell you a HUGE factor as to why I left the state of New York; WEATHER!!!! The day prior to his graduation (the date we all arrived from our respective originating cities) the weather was beautiful! It was sunny and nice. That evening; however a front moved in and the temps dropped and it started to rain. Of course the next day; graduation day was raining cats and dogs AND was cold! Thank goodness I checked the weather (although disbelieving of it for May) yet still managed to bring a coat and scarf. It was miserable. The ceremony took place underneath a tent and the school president said in his speech that it was the seventh year in a row where it rained. UGH!

My sisters Sherri and Tracie as well as Sherri's eldest son David and his wife and two boys all came to see him graduate. We made our way through people and managed to grab seats. It was a free for all underneath the tent and pretty much a wet; muddy mess.

After the president spoke the commencement remarks were given by Tony Kushner; the award winning playwright for Angels in America.

After all the degree candidates were conferred we went inside to dry off and warm up. Obviously you can see just how bundled up we were from this photo!

Matthew wanted to eat at PF Changs so we drove into White Plains for dinner. We were all in town for the weekend staying in Stamford, CT and we agreed that we would take the train from CT to NYC the next day.

Photos of the boys, David and Lucas getting a bath. Just too cute not to post!

The three of us were born to a Jewish father and non Jewish mother. Each time we're all together in NY we want to nosh on yummy things such as chopped liver sandwiches; gefilte fish and black and white cookies! We decided once we got into the city to hit a deli and order such things. We dined at Ben's Kosher Deli. Now the black and white cookies in NYC are a little different from the "halfmoon" cookies from upstate. Hemstrought's Bakery made the finest halfmoons out there as the cookie part is so very different from a black and white cookie from the city. Be sure to click on the halfmoon link to get the recipe!

After lunch we walked through the city to Times Square and hit up the Hard Rock Cafe as well as the M&M Factory for the kids. We walked through the Fashion District but didn't make it to the World Trade Center Memorial. Perhaps next time.

After the day in the city we made our way back to Connecticut and called it a night as we all were scheduled to leave the next day. My sister Tracie had an early morning flight out of JFK and I had an early evening flight out of La Guardia. We had a late lunch in White Plains and said our goodbyes to all the nephews as the three sisters will see each other again next month to do it all over again! Pin It Now!
