My cousin Teena turned 60 this year. Her daughters Emily and Maggie put their heads together and decided to throw her a surprise birthday party. Dave and I decided to add to the surprise and make the trek back to Central New York to join in the festivities. Mind you; March in Rochester, NY is still very cold with lots of snow on the ground!
We flew Southwest Airlines from San Antonio to Buffalo and rented a car. We came up on Friday and decided to spend Friday night in Niagara Falls; the US side and stayed at the Sheraton on the Falls.
Believe me now when I talk about March weather?
We had dinner and gambled that evening then on Saturday morning we drove from Buffalo to Rochester and checked in to the Homewood Suites by Hilton Rochester/Greece; the town I was grew up in initially.
Her party was that afternoon and the girls reserved a room at the Olmstead Lodge at Highland Park. The lodge is named after Frederick Law Olmstead, who is considered the father of American landscape architecture. Highland Park is a 150 acre park and is home to the Lilac Festival each year in May. I loved growing up in Rochester and going to the park in May to smell the lilacs and they also offer great sledding grounds in the winter.
Teena was shocked and surprised when she walked in to see such and array of family gathered for her birthday. My sister Sherri came in for it as well as Teena's son Aaron, and her sister Laurie and brother Michael.
On Sunday we met for brunch at the D&R Depot Restaurant in LeRoy, NY. LeRoy NY is known as the home of Jell-O and even has it’s own museum; the Jell-O Gallery! After brunch with the family we hit to road to Buffalo and flew back to San Antonio. It was a great mini family reunion weekend!
