Girl's Birthday weekend in NYC

Okay; while this particular trip was sans Dave; it's worthy of posting as it was a great trip to New York City! My girlfriend Lisa; a native Texan turned 40 on March 22nd. She had never been to NYC and said she wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday there and celebrate we did! It was three of us who went and we flew out on Thursday, March 19th. When we arrived the weather was cold and rainy; pretty depressing but the sun came out the rest of the weekend and while we were cold; we bundled up and made the best of it! We stayed at the Embassy Suites New York. The location of the hotel was just steps away from the World Trade Center Memorial . We were a bit away from all the rest of the activities in the city but we made the best of it by cab, subway and foot. We arrived Thursday afternoon with plans for dinner and a show. We ate at Katz's Deli and our eye were bigger then our stomachs but we did it!

Mmm...mmm...I ate the whole thing! It's a chopped liver sandwich.

After engorging ourselves on chopped liver, pastrami and egg malts we had tickets to Avenue Q on Broadway. We walked from the Deli to the show and took in the sights of Times Square.
Times Square at night.

On Friday we got up and hoofed it over to the subway passing Ground Zero and the site for the World Trade Center Memorial and Museum. We stopped by Historic St. Paul's Chapel (est 1766). It's Manhattan's oldest public building in continuous use. We got on the subway where we were entertained by performance artists.

We stopped off at Museum Row and walked along Park Ave. It was cold and beautiful then we stumbled upon this artwork.

This sculpture is Night Presence IV (1972, cor-ten steel) on the green median strip of Park Avenue. The artist is Louise Nevelson. Nevelson donated the sculpture as a gift to the City of New York.

We then walked over to the Guggenheim Museum. Just before going in though; we stepped across the street to a portion of Central Park. For you Sex in the City fans we were at the reservoir area where all the runners and joggers go.

After there we went to the Met; Metropolitan Museum of Art. There's so much of that Museum to see you can't cover it all in a day. Lisa wanted to see the Egyptian exhibition so we toured that portion of the museum.

This is the Temple of Dendur. The reflecting pool and glass wall are meant to represent the Nile and steep cliffs.

We were famished by then and we had to have a hot dog from a street vendor; yummy!!! After lunch we walked down Fifth Ave and made our way into Central Park for a carriage ride. Our drive told us that our carriage was the exact same one used in the Disney film, Enchanted.

Here's our carriage!

My cousin's cousin; yes I know it sounds crazy. I just call her my cousin...said that if it was ice skating we wanted to do while in NYC we should skate at Central Park. Now just looking at the photo makes it look all inviting but by this time we were so frozen that Lisa looked at the rink and said, "Yup! Looks great! I can say I've been here!". So...we passed on the skating.

Ice skaters in Central Park

After riding around Central Park and taking in various photo opportunities we then made our way by bus to Rockefeller Plaza (saw the skaters there too), St. Patrick's Cathedral (Lisa lit a candle) and to Juicy Couture (Lisa had to have a photo op to show her daughters). From there we made our way over to the Empire State Building. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon; great day for looking out but the problem was we had an elevator out and it took HOURS to get to the top. By the time we did the sun had set and it was completely dark outside. I was so disappointed for Lisa but she has a fear of heights and was a little nervous getting up there but once she did; it was great!

The Chrysler Building

By the time we finished our tour we were starved and Lisa wanted to go to an Irish Pub as her daughter requested a tee shirt from any NYC Irish Pub. We ate at a place called Jack Dempseys. The guide at the Empire State Building told us that at the restaurant if you have three drinks; the fourth is free. Well...we drank our share of drinks at Jack Dempsey's then made our way into the next pub; Foley's. Foley's got national recognition as "The Bar that Banned Danny Boy." Read up on it if you get the chance. We had a good 'ol time at Foley's throwing back the drinks (I personally paid for it dearly the next day) then made our way to Legends; a third pub; only more high end!

Having waaayyy too much fun at Foley's.

The next day we tackled the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island; another cold but sunny day.
View from the ferry

As we got such a late start on Saturday; by the time we made it over to the Statue; we missed out on Ellis Island. We got to see it from the Ferry but missed going inside. After that we made our way over to Chinatown; specifically Canal Street for purse shopping. We had the experience of a lifetime as one of the vendors we shopped was busted by the NYPD. We couldn't believe we were going to be arrested for buying knock off bags but thankfully the police let the customers go and proceeded to arrest the vendors. WOW! While in Chinatown we had a great late lunch at Excellent Dumpling House. After a day of shopping and touring we made our way back to the hotel to shower and change.

That evening our intent was to have a cocktail in the bar of the Hotel Gansevoort located in the hip meatpacking district. When we arrived we were hungry so decided to eat dinner first. We ate at a restaurant that I can't for the life of me remember the name but the food was overpriced and not so good. After dinner we attempted to go back to the hotel only to be told that there was a line to get in. To the hotel?!! It was crazy. It was so cold and we were so tired from the night before and that afternoon that we decided to go back to the hotel. We were bummed the next day that we didn't stick it out but we thought another time.

On Sunday we awoke ravenous again and this time we made our way back to Chinatown to cross Canal Street into Little Italy for some tasty NY pizza! We grabbed a bite; hit a pastry shop for canollis, did a few bits of last minute shopping then back to the airport for our return flight.

It was a great weekend! I'd love to return again when it's warmer! My close is the picture of NY style pizza; wonderful!
