Dave and I departed San Antonio on Thursday, May 1 for Maui, Hawaii. This is our first trip to Maui as we have been to Honolulu previously. We flew on American Airlines to Dallas then a non-stop (8 hour flight) from Dallas to Kahului, Maui. We rented a car and drove from the airport to our hotel; the Hyatt Resort & Spa in Maui. After check in we were hungry and being the carnivores we are; we went for steaks. We did our best to stay up so that we could acclimate and by 10:00 pm we were shot.
On Friday we woke and enjoyed breakfast from our balcony. We actually overlook Lahaina; the city where we are staying, and a graveyard as well as a portion of the ocean. When we initially checked in we were given a low floor. We opened the curtains and our view was a roof. We asked to be relocated and they did; the same room and four floors higher; thus the graveyard and ocean view. It's a very unique view.
After breakfast we went to the health club for a workout then we sat at the pool. It's a pretty good pool with the kiddie pool located on the other side. There aren't any slides or tubes to float in but it hits the spot. The chairs that surround the pool are so close to one another you can barely squeeze through them. After a few hours by the pool; I sent Dave over to the beach to see if it was an option to walk it or sit out on it. He returned shaking his head "no" that the ocean literally came up to the end of the property line and you couldn't really walk it. We are here at this hotel for 3 nights and we fly out on Sunday for Kauai. After 2 nights in Kauai we return to Maui for another 3 nights.
We decided to not fry ourselves as we did in Aruba in January and left the pool about 3 hours later. We returned to the room to relax and shower. Our Friday night plans consisted of attending the show Ulalena. As we have done a luau in the past; we wanted to do something different this time. Our package pricing consisted of a pre-show dinner next door at "The Rainforest" restaurant. The meal was just okay. Not the greatest but it was included. The show itself wasn't bad; we had expected more of a Cirque de Soleil experience but it was a mythical reenactment of ancient Hawaiian times and covering the history of Hawaii.
We haven't quite decided what to do yet for Saturday but we'll be sure to report back on the weekend.
Mahalo; thank you for reading!
