Today was our golf day in Puerto Rico. Dave was stoked when he found on-line earlier today, a Troon golf course with three finishing holes on the beach for $35 a round after 1:00 pm. Upon calling the course direct to book; he was disappointed to find out that it was really $300 a round including club rentals. Damn internet! The gal at the course informed him that Troon recently bought them out and the website was not current. So; he did further golf investigative work and found us a round of golf next door at the Berwind Country Club; two rounds and rental clubs all for $110! What a steal!
We first picked up the rental car next door and was advised to drive the beach route to get to the course. The drive was scenic but took us through some very poor areas of PR; however we arrived in a mere 30 minutes. We got to the club and decided to have lunch prior to our round.
The club was built in the 60's and pretty much still looks the same. It is situated on the east coast of Puerto Rico; 19 miles from the capital, San Juan. It is a 18 hole palm-lined golf course with several water hazards and ocean views. It was built on a former coconut plantation. Even the tee box markers were coconuts.
The flora and the fauna were very entertaining. Dave drove our cart up to two iguanas humping. We had no idea about the mating rituals of the Puerto Rican iguana. No sooner had I readied my camera then a THIRD younger iguana came running out to join in on the humping and knocked off the old guy. We captured it on video; unfortunately from here I am unable to post video and pictures. I will post when we return home.
The weather was golf perfect and we managed to stay dry as well; no afternoon showers dropped on us. After a perfect day of weather and golf; we decided when we left; to take a different route back to our hotel. HUGE mistake! We each have google maps on our phones so there was no GPS system in the car to use. However; google maps changed constantly whenever I updated "my location". We drove through the bowels of San Juan attempting our return. Took us damn near and hour and a half to get back. Not sure how drivers in San Juan manage to find their way around town when half the streets don't show street names. It was a challenge but obviously we found our way back.
Tomorrow we are going to the El Yunque rain forest with hopes to squeeze in some snorkeling as well.
Until then! Adios...
