Touchdown; Canada!

Dave and I arrived in Calgary today. We are here to experience Canada's summer temps or as they say in San Antonio; "cooler" temps for a few days vacation then off to Vancouver. The beautiful thing about Calgary is that it is located roughly 50 miles east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies!

We just missed the Calgary Stampede; which bills itself as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. It's a huge festival, exhibition and rodeo which is held for ten days from early to mid July. In San Antonio we have the rodeo in February and the Cowboy Breakfast. They too have a breakfast but it's a pancake breakfast and it's free! This year the Calgary Stampede Rodeo Committee was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. During Stampede they don't say "yeehaw" they say "yahoo"! Go figure....

Anyways.......Dave and I arrived this afternoon and after check in at the Calgary Marriott we hoofed it over to Stephen Avenue; literally a block from the hotel. It's considered a major pedestrian mall but it's actually a portion of 8 Avenue SW between 4 Street SW and 1 Street SE. The street is known for it's high end retail, restaurants, and pubs. We stumbled upon the Palace Theater which was converted into a sports bar. The Wildfire Grill is the name and it's logo'd throughout with the Calgary Flames (hockey). Talk about a unique way to save an historic building!

After walking the shopping areas we were pretty hungry and opted to eat at Opa, Souvlaki of Greece restaurant. It was by far, hands down the BEST gyro I have ever consumed. It was phenomenal!

Our goal this evening is to take advantage of the concierge level access; have a few drinks and snacks and decide where to go for dinner.

Tomorrow our plans are to take in the Eau Claire Market, the Glenbow Museum and the Calgary Tower!

Check back in for more. Au revoir! Pin It Now!
