Camp Wood, Texas

Howdy! While Dave and I didn't actually travel out of state this particular weekend; June 8, 2007 we did make it out with friends for a kayaking weekend on the Nueces River to Camp Wood, Texas! It wasn't a lengthy trip by any means but an enjoyable getaway. We drove out on a Friday afternoon; spent the evening and dined at a localy eatery; the Wagon Wheel Cafe (see photo) and then kayaked the Nueces River on Saturday. We came home late Saturday evening in that we had to be home for Dave's H-E-B Partner & Vendor Appreciation golf tournament the next day!

Camp Wood, Texas is a dynamic community of some 800 souls located in Real county on the western edge of the Texas Hill Country in the Nueces River Canyon. "One of the fifteen most scenic spots in Texas." (Texas Highways, Nov., 1998) Just 40 miles north of Uvalde in southwest Texas, Camp Wood is located in the western edge of the Texas Hill Country Trail along the the western border of Real County. Situated near the headwaters of the Nueces River, Camp Wood is located in one of the most picturesque areas of the Texas Hill Country Region.

We spent the weekend at the Mill Wheel on the Nueces at "the Cottage." The Cottage was built in the early twenties and was originally three rooms with a front and back porch. http://www.campwood.com/millwheel

The Nueces River is a river in the U.S. state of Texas, approximately 315 mi (507 km) long. It drains a region in central and southern Texas southeastward into the Gulf of Mexico. It is the southernmost major river in Texas north of the Rio Grand. Nueces is Spanish for nuts; early settlers discovered numerous pecan trees along its banks, thus giving the river its name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nueces_River

We were there also for the christening of the "La Chalupa"; Molly's kayak! Since we had no champagne; in traditional Texan charm; we christened the craft with beer!
